Clear Creek Winter

Clear Creek Winter

As this warm spell continues, the curiosity killed the cat! Clear Creek is thawing, for now.  This may be a tiny window of opportunity, so if you plan on getting up here, do it ASAP, before the next storm blows in and freezes everything up.  Trust me, it's still winter up here.  That said, a dry/dropper is the ticket in the winter on Clear Creek.  Once in a while, the fish will surprise you and eat the dry, like they did today! I used a giant moth, but a small BWO or Caddis pattern dropped to a Beadhead brassie or...

Winter Fishing

Winter Fishing

I've been fishing Deckers the month of December and it has been really good.  Short line high sticking is the way to fish Deckers in the winter.  Precise presentation will often sway these picky trout into a subtle bite of your fly.  These subtle bites make it necessary to use the smallest indicator you feel comfortable with.  As long as you are picking up some algae every other cast or so, you know you have the correct amount of weight on.  Some flies that have been working for me are: Brassies, RSII's, BWO patterns and eggs.  Keep your nymphs/emergers small,...

Clear Creek

Clear Creek

So, I fished Clear Creek Canyon the other day for a few hours. I landed four.  Just about every fish was on the Beadhead Rainbow Warrior.  Size 18 and smaller works well.  I did have one swipe at my Orange Stimmie as well.  Like usual, I was throwing a dry/dropper rig.  The majority of the river is pretty shallow, so I prefer the dry/dropper method most of the time.  Nymphing those deeper holes can be effective as well.  Brassies size 18 and smaller have been working as well.  Beadhead or not, it doesn't seem to matter with the Brassie, but...
