Getting Going

Getting Going

The ice is melting off of Clear Creek but the river is still mostly clear.  There is a small window between now and run-off.  Bugs have even been seen flying around the creek.  Mostly just midges but that is still a good sign for clear creek!      I've been getting most of my fish on a size 18-22 Beadhead Brassie.  The Caddis aren't prevalent on the creek yet but that doesn't mean that nymphs aren't swimming around in the water!  Caddis and midges should work well.  Small dry flies like a Parachute Adams might convince a weary trout.  Spring is...

Clear Creek Winter

Clear Creek Winter

As this warm spell continues, the curiosity killed the cat! Winter Fishing

Winter Fishing

I've been fishing Deckers the month of December and it has been really good.  Short line high sticking is the way to fish Deckers in the winter.  Precise presentation will often sway these picky trout into a subtle bite of your fly.  These subtle bites make it necessary to use the smallest indicator you feel comfortable with.  As long as you are picking up some algae every other cast or so, you know you have the correct amount of weight on.  Some flies that have been working for me are: Brassies, RSII's, BWO patterns and eggs.  Keep your nymphs/emergers small,...

Clear Creek

Clear Creek

Clear Creek is fishing fair at the moment. The Creek is murky and rising, things will only get worse until we are into and out of run-off season.   You should get out while the fishing is good.  The canyon fishes well, and through the town of Idaho Springs is good too.  Idaho Springs to Georgetown Lake along the frontage road can be a great spot to check out too.    Bugs of choice for me lately have been Putterbaugh Caddis and Orange Stimmies for dries.  Adams and Griffiths knats can be good too.  Sizes 14 and smaller are my go-to sizes....
